The gospel is comedy, the place to start is with a woman laughing, an old woman and after a lifetime in the desert her face is cracked, wrinkled, she is laughing because she is 91 and the stranger that turned up at their tent was not a man to read the meter! An angel has just told her she is going to have a baby, and she cannot control herself, her husband tries to keep a straight face and he can’t control himself either. The old woman’s name is Sarah and the old man’s name Abraham they are laughing at the idea that the baby is being born in an Geriatric and not a maternity ward and Help the Aged will be picking up the bill. They are laughing because not only does the angel believe it to be true, but the angel expects them to believe it to. They are laughing because part of themselves does believe it, but another part of themselves knows it would take a fool to believe it. Who would choose the trickster like Jacob over a good working man like Esau? Or choose Noah who hit the bottle? Who would have foretold that out of a sordid affair of David and Bathsheba Solomon would be born with his hi IQ? And from Solomon would be born a whole line of apostate kings ending with the king of kings? The parables can be read as a comedy. God is the shepherd who gets a kick out of the one lost sheep rather the 99 that had the good sense not to get lost in the first place.
