Surfing

A surfer told me that waves come in sets and there are a number of waves in a set. In any one set there is the best wave. A number of the waves are considered “duds”, i.e. they don’t take you very far. After a dud you have to swim back out to try again. Once the best wave in the set comes, you have to commit by starting to paddle towards it. This needs the surfer to be brave as they risk being dumped by the wave and injured by the board or the fin may lacerate the legs. But once you catch the wave after potentially many duds, it is an exhilarating experience. It brings joy. The waves are like God’s call on our life, we need to answer the call and commit to it. There is danger and it may look as if everything is going wrong, but these times are the times of learning. But there comes a moment when after the call of God there is utter joy.
