Imputing motives
When someone says no to our invitation we sometimes impute meaning onto the refusal. We can attribute the fault or responsibility to them rejecting us personally, or not feeling as strongly about the friendship as we do, or judging that our lives are not worth investigating. The bible says we need to be very careful in judgment when imputing motives to people whose hearts we are not able to read. We can say things about them that God knows not to be true. When we do so, we are judging them on the basis of our “insight.” I have found that this is one of the main barriers to invitation, we judge others and we are judged. Invite someone to take a closer look at Christ and his church.
