Losing Control
I wonder if we could have our deepest fear surgically extracted what would life be like? Fear stops us living, I know people who have a fear of their worst fear and due to that they never give life their best. Jesus faced his deepest fear in Gethsemane. The Gospel writer Mark says horror came over him. The Gospel of Matthew in the NRSV says he was depressed and confused. Why is Jesus afraid? He fears the cup of God’s fury, the wrath of God. This is Jesus’ worst nightmare. Jesus took his fear to his Father. Every fear at its root is a fear of losing control. We don’t have control but God has. Go to your garden of Gethsemane and talk to your Father about your cup, your deepest fear. Invite someone to take a closer look at Christ and his church.
