Invitation the verge of Jordan
In the hymn best known as Bread of heaven or Guide me Oh thou great Jehovah the third verse asks God to help our fears
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever give to thee.
I will ever give to thee.
Jordan River is a place of demarcation.
You “cross over” from one state of experience with God to a truer and more serious and real state. Recall that Israel passed from the wilderness into the land of Canaan when they crossed the Jordan River. And when they did cross over, the older generation who had doubted so much forty long years beforehand, had died off. So crossing Jordan is getting into that place God wants you and me, after we get rid of a doubting element in our personal lives represented by these older doubters who died.
Even Jesus was baptized in Jordan when he began His ministry of the supernatural. When you tread the pathway of invitation may your anxious fears subside. Invite someone today to take a closer look at Christ and his church.
