Threatened People
Churches tend to reflect people’s fears instead of challenging them. Duncan Morrow has described churches as ‘protective fortresses for threatened people’. As an example, recently one church said to me that they didn’t feel comfortable with certain types of worship songs. It is so easy to be against something rather than to turn the threat into an opportunity. It is the same in mission, we feel threatened by rejection, so we develop a mission prevention zone. Face the threat that an invitation might go wrong and invite someone to take a closer look at Christ and his church.
