Pre-disposed not talk
Many people are not not predisposed to talk, we don’t talk on trains, we have been told by parents not to talk to strangers. We were told don’t speak unless you are spoken to! I find that advice–to avoid strangers–to be wrong-headed. There is no way for us to meet people and expand our circle of friends without being open to those we don’t yet know (i.e., strangers). That advice advocates avoiding people thereby guaranteeing that we start from a baseline of fear. When we have small circles of friends it is no wonder that we fear rejection from the few friends we have! Strangers can be friends just waiting to happen.
