We just know we must be doing something regarding mission in the church, and as each initiative fails we try another and yet another as we become ever more tired. We then comfort ourselves by having exhaustion as a status symbol. “Initiativeitis” is the disease we develop from anxiety that we must be doing something. It is easily solved by not seeking success but reflecting in failure and by asking God what He might be saying when it goes wrong. We can even use the spiritual discipline of lamentation. Simply invite someone to take a closer look at Christ and His church, we don’t need more initiatives all we need is to get back to the basics of responding to the prompting of God.
